The Architecture and Design of La Cattedrale Vegetale
The Cattedrale Vegetale in Bergamo, northern Italy, is a unique cathedral that merges nature and religion. Instead of stone, the cathedral is crafted from trees and branches, standing at Mount Arera.
The five-aisle basilica boasts 42 columns, woven together from over 600 chestnut and hazel branches and 1,800 fir tree poles forming the arches. A single beech tree has been planted within each column to ensure the structure’s longevity.
In time, the trees will outgrow the man-made support, creating a natural roof and wall. The frame was finished in 2010 as part of the United Nations’ International Year of Biodiversity, but it remains an evolving cathedral as the beech trees mature over the decades.
The Cattedrale Vegetale is one of the world’s most magnificent and structured tree cathedrals, but it is not alone. Its creator, artist/architect Giuliano Mauri, built a similar structure in Valsugana, Italy, as part of Arte Sella, an environmental art exhibition, in 2002.
