27. Meet Renzo & Lucia (Intermediate)
Level: Intermediate

Renzo & Lucia, two of Jane’s friends, met and fell in love last summer in Rimini, a well-known seaside location. Now they’re planning to meet in Rome to spend a romantic weekend. Let’s review and practice how to describe people and actions, and how to use not-so-easy to grasp sentences like “si sono conosciuti” (they met each other) and “si sono innamorati” (they fell in love). Today we are going to learn how to use the subjunctive tense – and be warned: even Italians say it’s not easy to learn! We’ll learn that we’ll need to use the subjunctive, present or past tense, when in the presence of specific sentences such as “spero che…” (I hope that…), “penso che…” (I think that…), or “voglio che…” (I want that…).

Today we’ll read you a letter that we just received from Jane (she’s coming back!). In this short letter we are going to learn some useful expressions you can use when writing to a friend, like “mi sei mancato” (I missed you), “non vedo l’ora di vederti” (I can’t wait to see you), or “a presto” (see you soon).

Here’s a true, funny story that happened to one of Jane’s friends some time ago at the beach. In this episode we’ll use some long sentences: we’ll learn and practice some useful words, like “quando” (when), “cosi’” (so), “mentre” (while), “dopo” (after), “prima” (before), that we can use to connect short sentences and build longer ones.
