How would you describe the difference between “il giorno” and “la giornata”?

The two expressions mean the same thing - they are interchangeable.

However, please note these examples:

“Buona giornata” gives better the idea of continuity and it’s used more when you say bye to someone. It’s not really common between really close friends. “Buon giorno” is used more as “hello”
