39. Validate Your Ticket! (Intermediate)
May 13th, 2007

Learn Italian with Podcasts! One of the most convenient ways to travel throughout Italy is by train - In today’s episode we’re going to hear a conversation that takes place on a train in Italy between a foreign tourist and a ticket controller, and we’ll learn a thing or two about travelling by train, tickets, and what you need to do prior to boarding the train. While doing so, we’ll review and practice the use of pronouns (like “lo”, “la”, “li”, “le”) and some other useful verb constructions. Enjoy!

May 14th, 2007 at 9:13 amThat’s what happened to me last year when I went to visit Italy - but the ticket controller was much nicer than this one. He did not give me a fine, validated the ticket himself, and ended up suggesting a restaurant where to take my family for dinner! Thanks Jane and Massimo - keep the good stuff coming!

May 26th, 2007 at 5:51 amGrazie mille for this episode. I only wish I had it before I left for Italy! We took a train from Lucca to Pisa and the conductor chided us for not getting our ticket validated! He was very nice though and we had a great time in Pisa.

January 31st, 2008 at 8:10 amTaking the train from Vernazza to Manorollo coast 1.7e Euro which mushroomed on the 3 minute trip to 30 Euro when the conductor who saw us boaed fined us.
Kind and understanding was not his strong point.
If only I had had this course then!!!

March 23rd, 2008 at 5:53 amCiao:
I have two questions..
1. Could you explain why ‘va’ is used in the expression ‘Il biglietto va timbrato’?
2. Why do you say ‘Eccolo qui..’ (Here it is..) and not just ‘Eccolo..’?….Is the addition of ‘qui’ just for emphasis?
LearnItalianPod.com Says:
March 25th, 2008 at 8:24 am“Va” is third person singular of the verb “andare” (to go), so the expression literally means “the ticket goes stamped”. It is an idiomatic expression that has the same meaning as “the ticket must be stamped”.
“Qui” is in fact added just for emphasis. You could have said as well “eccolo”. But “eccolo qui” is more common.
Ludwig Says:
May 7th, 2008 at 2:11 pmThe “va timbrato” really threw me for a loop too? I would have expected something like “deve essere timbrato”. Can you talk more about the grammar of “va timbrato” (& if possible, phrases like it)?
LearnItalianPod.com Says:
May 7th, 2008 at 10:48 pmThe verb “andare” is used sometimes in the sense of “must” followed by a past participle. “Va timbrato” is a classic example of this rule. Other example is “non vanno lasciati soli” (they must not be left alone).
