26. I Would Buy A Ferrari (Intermediate)
Level: Intermediate

Learn Italian Language with Podcasts! Today we are going to finish what we have started a couple of weeks ago. Then, we have introduced the expression “se io fossi” (if I were); today, we are going to learn more about hypothetical sentences, and how to use the subjunctive and the conditional together. It’s not easy, be warned! While doing so, Jane is telling us about her dream of living in a villa in Tuscany, and Massimo about his dream of buying a Ferrari. Enjoy!

October 29th, 2006 at 8:17 pmGreat website! I’ve found it thru stumbleupon — My Italian is fairly advanced (I’ve lived in Milano for two years), and this is what I needed to refresh my knowledge of the language. Keep up the good work!
I like your examples of conditional from this lesson… se fossi ricco, tornerei in Italia!

January 8th, 2007 at 7:50 pmI’m really enjoying the practice of speaking through your podcasts! However, sometimes you use such a “long” sentence, and it’s difficult to repeat from memory! For example, the sentence “O forse…..” is immediately preceded and followed by a long sentence that is difficult to remember without being able to see it.

January 21st, 2007 at 11:04 pmLouise, we sometimes use longer passages on purpose, to try to “push it” a bit and give students something to work on – we don’t want it to be discouraging, though, but something challenging…
Also, remember that by becoming a LearnItalianPod’s subscriber you would get access to all dialogue transcripts.

April 3rd, 2007 at 7:12 pmI love these lessons, Jane and Massimo. You’re doing a great job teaching me. Because my iPod sorts all the episodes by date recorded and not by beginner or intermediate lesson number, this lesson is directly proceeded by, for example, #48 beginner level. As part of my routine, I replay the beginner episode before going on to the intermediate one. It makes me feel like I have really learned something as I understand most everything said before any translation. Keep up the great work! And keep speak in Italian as much as possible please. Thanks!

In the supplementary section you provide the subjunctive form of avere(avessi, etc.. ..I would suggest that instead of just labeling it as subjunctive you provide a more specific label…, that is imperfect subjunctive. The same suggestion applies to lesson 25 for the verb essere.

March 8th, 2008 at 5:57 pmMarvin, thank you for the suggestion – we’ll provide a more specific label – grazie!

June 2nd, 2008 at 11:45 amYour translation of per carita doesn’t seem to fit with other sites I use where they translate it as “for god’s sake” or “for heaven’s sake”. These meanings are obviously quiet different from yours and I wouldn’t want to offend anybody!
I love the website by the way!
Ciao
Darren

June 2nd, 2008 at 9:30 pmExcellent comment, Darren. “Per carita’” is an expression very versatile, and in the episode we’ve used it exactly the same way as the expression “you have got to be joking” would be used in English.
Nevertheless, after your comment, we’re considering if changing the translation would be more appropriate.
Remember, though, that the expression “per carita’” is used in Italian with the meaning of “hell, no!” or “no way!”, or also “you’re kidding!”, etc.

September 13th, 2008 at 7:46 am Hello, Jane and Massimo, thank you for this site, it provides a great help in my learning of Italian.
About the conditional – is it true to say that this conditional is formed on the basis of the future, like comprero – comprerei, verro-verrei? Does it happen always?
Thank you.
