“Sopra” and “su” can be both translated with the preposition “on” — they both have the meaning of “above, over, on top, upstairs, upon”.

So, the general rule is that there is no difference, but you’ll find some cases when you have to use one or the other.

Examples: “abito al piano di sopra” (I live upstairs) - In this case, you must use “sopra”.

“Non ho niente da dire su di te” (I have nothing to say about you). In this case, you must use “su”.
