44. Our Little Puppy Toby
August 27th, 2006

Tobia is the Italian name of Jane’s nice little puppy and he likes hiding everywhere. Massimo is looking for him on the bed, under the sofa, and behind the plant. Let’s see if he can find him so they can go play outside - it’s such a beautiful day! Today we are learning and practicing some Italian prepositions, like “sopra” (on, above, on top of), “sotto” (under, below), and “dietro” (behind).

January 25th, 2007 at 1:50 pmGracia tanta, Jane and Massimo. Italian was spoken in my home growing up, but it was the Marchigianni dialect, and this is helping me to speak a more proper Italian language. Also, I have forgotten much of the vocabulary, so this is refreshing my memory. Since my grandparents have passed away, even my mother has a hard time conversing with the relatives who telephone periodically. Thank you so much!!!

June 12th, 2007 at 1:45 pmI’m enjoying the lessons. Can you tell me, what the difference, if any, is between “sopra” and “su”? In some programs, I’ve seen “su” used much the same as “sopra”. For example, “un uomo su un cavallo.”
LearnItalianPod.com Says:
June 12th, 2007 at 10:57 pm“Sopra” and “su” can be both translated with the preposition “on” — they both have the meaning of “above, over, on top, upstairs, upon”.
So, the general rule is that there is no difference, but you’ll find some cases when you have to use one or the other.
Examples: “abito al piano di sopra” (I live upstairs) - In this case, you must use “sopra”.
“Non ho niente da dire su di te” (I have nothing to say about you). In this case, you must use “su”.

May 16th, 2008 at 5:24 pmOh, my God, I forgot about this web site.
I am in touch with relatives in Ostra, Senagalia, Remini, Italy, second and third cousins.
My mom passed on last month, it is so hard, Italian mom and grandmoms kept family together, it is so hard for me,
with today’s generations. My children were so darn close to Nona Rita, oh, and it was funny they called her mom my grandmother Old Noni.
Holidays, my children in their 30’s still talk about them, Christmas Eve, my mother in law was also Italian, so my children know good food, and how to cook Italian.
Oh, my South Boston Irish Son In Law cooks only Italian.
Yes, knowing the Marchigianni Dialect made studying Italian very easy in school, and also with Latin.
